A tanker conveying petrol has exploded around Banire/Ejigbadero bus stop in the Ebgeda area of Lagos.
Confirming the incident, Femi Oke-Osanyintolu, the Director-General of the Lagos State Emergency Management Agency (LASEMA) said the incident was caused by a brake failure.
Also, the Acting Coordinator, Lagos Territorial Office of the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA), Ibrahim Farinloye, confirmed the incident.
He said: “At about 00:20hrs the NEMA received distress alert on a tanker fully loaded with about 45,000 litres of PMS exploded immediately after crashing at Banire/Ejigbadero Busstop, Egbeda, Lagos State.
“No live was lost or property destroyed However, the tanker with no registration number is still half filled with PMS and cross the major highway.
“The Police Disaster Management Unit and Gowon Estate Police Station have apprehended the driver of the truck”, Farinloye stated.
He explained that efforts were on to de-can and trans-load the content to another tanker before the road can be opened for traffic.
“Agencies on at the scene are NEMA, LASEMA Response Unit, Police DMU and the Gowon Estate Division,” he added.
Mr Oke-Osanyintolu, who reported that there are no casualties and no property has been damaged by the explosion, said post-incident assessment will be carried out and the wreckage will be removed from the thoroughfare.
