When a man shows out-of-the-ordinary leadership aptitude by employing his exceptionally quick wits and tremendous adaptability powers to tackle difficult challenges, he becomes needed by his people.
When that man combines his problem-solving aptitude with high ideals and a strong sense of justice, a passion to help others especially by improving their standard of living in the best ways possible, he becomes the people’s choice over and again.

Those who are yet to outgrow the mud puddle child’s play fail to reflect on the agencies and structures that birth the concept of ‘Ilufemiloye’. But what do you expect from a class of thinkers for whom politics isn’t about responsibilities but a dirty game, like the mud puddle experience of childhood?

More people and professional groups are stepping forward in the build-up to the 2022 governorship election in Osun State, to pay glowing tributes and endorse Mr Adegboyega Oyetola, the incumbent governor of Osun, for a second term in office. This, of course, hasn’t been without strategic pinpoints to critical issues that Oyetola has addressed within the boundaries of the lean resources in the State.

On Tuesday, 11th January 2022, stakeholders in the education sector, from the State House of Assembly committee on education, from All Nigeria Confederation of Principals of Secondary Schools (ANCOPSS), from State Universal Basic Education Board, from Osun Chapter of Nigerian Union of Teachers; took turns to endorse Oyetola on the basis of his administration’s investment in turning around the fortune of the education sector in the State as manifested in the myriad achievements recorded since assumption of office. On that particular occasion, 1000 newly recruited teachers were undergoing a pre-engagement training and orientation programme. These stakeholders couldn’t help but express surprise about how Oyetola has effectively joggled his balls without any falling, despite the obvious economic quagmire; unlike leaders who sacrifice their citizen’s welfare in times of peace.

Oyetola has taken education many notches higher than the wreckage he inherited. Prior to 2018 in Osun, the education sector was like a testing ground for detrimental policies and an open market for quackery, gross indiscipline and state-of-the-art hooliganism stemming from the single uniform regime that made students in public schools across the State appear in one and the same uniform. It was an era of breakdown in order. It was an era when children were abnormally transitioned to young adults without proper rite of passage to evaluate the preparedness of students for secondary education after their time in the primary arm. Consequently, donor agencies and critical stakeholders like Alumni associations withdrew their support and partnership, thanks to policies that misaligned with their vision and social responsibility drive. Looking at how far the sector has come since November 2018, one can begin to appreciate how much Oyetola has done to reposition education in Osun, to make it student-centred and activity-based, to build students that are problem solvers, critical thinkers and learners who are already competing effectively with their counterparts across the borders.
Barely one week before teacher’s pre-engagement session, traditional rulers in Osun under the umbrella of Osun State Traditional Council of Obas, lauded the modest achievements recorded by Oyetola’s administration in just a little over three years. The gentleman had just paid a surprise visit to the chamber where the monarchs were having their first meeting in 2022, but in exchange walked out of the chamber with an open endorsement.

His Imperial Majesty, the Ooni of Ife, Oba Enitan AdeyeyeOgunwusi Ojaja II, the presiding Chairman of the Osun State Traditional Council of Obas, attributed the Obas’ endorsement of Oyetola to his high sense of modesty, prudence, probity and integrity. Ooni noted that the Governor had performed creditably well to earn the royal blessings and support, saying the traditional rulers were solidly behind him and whatever he decided on.

“We are not politicians, we are royal fathers. But we like his style. We like what he is doing because he is a man of very few words; yet, he is putting a very outstanding performance that we can all see. He carries us along with his plans on what he wants to do.

“Like I said earlier, many of his colleagues that I have opportunity to be closer to, do ask how our Governor is doing it in view of the available resources and socioeconomic reality? But for us he is more of actions than words. We will continue to support him. So, in anything we can do, we will support him and we will continue to pray for him because of the way he has been reengineering the structure of the State. We are very proud of what he is doing”, Ooni of Ife said.

November 3, 2021 was another interesting time at Freedom Park, Osogbo, the Osun State capital, when the National Union of Road Transport Workers (NURTW) endorsed the candidature of Governor Adegboyega Oyetola of the State of Osun for a second term in office. The Union described Oyetola as a man of extraordinary performance, adding that his achievements in the last three years was the motivation for their support and open endorsement.

The Chairman of the South-West Zone and of Osun Council of NURTW, Comrade Olalekan Folorunso, described Oyetolaas a man of outstanding leadership traits and professional know-how, adding that the Union in particular and the State in general have benefitted from these qualities in no small measure.

“We also express gratitude to the government of Mr Adegboyega Oyetola, for the necessary recognition accorded our Union as a major stakeholders in the Osun project. This is another reason why we are also assuring him of our support”, Folorunso said.

Interestingly, the Chairman of the Lagos Council and Vice-Chairman of South-West Zone of the Union, Musiliu AyindeAkinsanya, popularly known as MC Oluomo, also joined the Osun Union to laud Governor Oyetola for the good work he was doing to bring real development to the State.
October 3, 2021, was another day of bold endorsement, this time by organised Labour groups in Osun, who described Oyetola as a father, and that workers in Osun were highly fortunate to have him steer the affairs of the State.

At the three-day retreat of the Osun State Chapter of the Nigeria Union of Local Government Employees (NULGE), the National President, Comrade Olatunji Akeem Ambali, lauded Oyetola for transforming the Labour situation in Osun, stating that: “Osun workers are not only happy but they have been transformed. You ended that disjointed and mutilated anti-workers remuneration scheme. We are happy because you abolished part payment of salaries in Osun state”.

Coming from a distant observer, you can tell that it wasn’t a local concoction by some praise-chanting survivalist.

One interesting remark about Oyetola’s impact on workers was from the State Chairman of NULGE, Comrade KehindeNathaniel Ogungbangbe, who said Oyetola has brought new lease of life to all workers in the State in general and Local Government in particular.

According to Ogungbangbe: “Your prompt payment of salaries and allowances has made it very possible for workers to be able to plan on their salaries for proper development.
“Sir, it is when you came on board in Osun that the children of workers stopped sitting at home due to inability of their parents to pay their School fees, which was unconnected with non-payment of full salary. The implementation of new minimum wage for our members, the monetization of one of our last earned promotion and the physical, socio-economic development of the State are few largesse that we have benefitted from your administration.

“We shall never forget the pardon granted to some of our members that were caught in the web of certificate racketeering, schooling without approval, just to mention but a few. Your level of humility and milk of kindness has brought peace and stability to our Union in particular and the State in general. Osun State is no more in the news for bad reasons. We are happy to be associated with you”, Ogungbangbe said.

What a man! What an impact!

During a colloquium organised by the Osun stste government to celebrate 30 years of the State’s creation, media heavyweights also took turns to pay glowing tributes to Oyetola whom they lauded for his progressive policies and programmes that have improved the overall outlook of the State.
Reputable names like Dr Yemi Farounbi, Dr Reuben Abati, Mr Steve Nwosu, Mr Babajide Kolade-Otitoju, also took time to endorse the candidature of Oyetola for continuity as the governor of the State beyond the current term, adding that it was risky for citizens to throw away the gains recorded under Oyetola’s administration.

Even hunters under the aegis of Nigerian Hunters’ Council did not fail to express their readiness to support the winning efforts of the administration of Governor AdegboyegaOyetola in addressing security issues in the State of Osun.

What of people who embarked on solidarity walks?

As part of the celebration of the 2021 International Youth Day, thousands of Osun Youths staged a carnival-like walk in Osogbo, to reinforce support for the administration of Governor Adegboyega Oyetola in Osun State. The solidarity walk, which began at about 9:00am from Ayetoro area of Osogbo, saw youths march to the State Secretariat, Abere, to declare their support for Oyetola.

It came as no surprise because Oyetola’s programmes and policies are unprecedented. It has never happened in the history of the State that youths will hold a reasonable percentage of leadership positions from Ward level up to State level. Oyetola it was who also gave Osun its first Youth Policy Document for profitable engagement of Osun youths. His commitment of reasonable percentages to different youth-centered concerns in the 2021 and 2022 budget shouldn’t also be overlooked.

The first day of December 2021 also witnessed a solidarity march by women from different walks of life, to the State Government House in Osogbo, to endorse the Governor for a second term in office. The women, who embarked on the walk under the auspices of ‘Osun Babes’ said the decision to publicly identify with and support the Governor for re-election in 2022 was on account of the various laudable initiatives of the Governor, ranging from infrastructural developments to citizens’ and workers’ welfare.

The question pops up again, having mentioned just a few groups among those who have endorsed Oyetola’scandidature: who doesn’t want Oyetola reelected? Is it the Alumni association of schools in Osun who are jubilant about Oyetola’s reversal of inimical policies that are non-compliant with global best practices? Is it the over 360,000 vulnerable citizens who have benefited from the Osun Food Support Scheme? Is it the residents of Osun across every political Ward who are benefitting from the revitalised and now functional 332 Primary Healthcare Centres? Is it the residents of Moro-Yakoyo-Ipetumodu-Asipa-Ife, Ada-Igbajo, Akindeko-Awosuru-Alekuwodo, Osogbo-Kelebe-Iragbiji axes of the state where Oyetola has rebuilt waste places and long-abandoned roads after over three decades? Is it the farmers that have continued to enjoy the government’s support through different agricultural empowerment programmes? Is it the residents of Ifetedo-Garage Olode axis whom Oyetola brought out of darkness after one decade? Is it the Micro, Small and Medium Scale sector that have benefitted from commerce-centered initiatives of Oyetola? Is it the traders who have received economic boost through market rehabilitation initiatives?

Is it the All Progressive Congress family in Osun that is gratefully cheering Oyetola for restoring the vibrancy that the party was known for? Is it the ‘igbimo agba’ that Oyetola has accorded due honour and benevolence, as a cultured gentleman for whom power isn’t an opportunity to disrespect the elders? Is it his political friends and well-wishers who are so proud of his achievements that they purchased a nomination form on his behalf to enable him contest and continue his good works in Osun? Is it his fellow governors who are keenly observing the goings-on in Osun and have consistently asked how Oyetola is governing with meagre resources?

Who doesn’t want Oyetola re-elected? Maybe the person isn’t a bona-fide member of the “Ilu”.
