A tale of the absurd it was in Atan Ota, Ogun state, when a 28 year old man, one Opeyemi Ganiyu threw caution to the winds by beating not only his wife blue black but stabbing his Mother-in-law to death during an incident described as purely a domestic squabble.
The accused who is currently cooling his feet in police custody in Ogun State is said to be a member of a notorious cult group in Atan Ota. The gang during the Endsars protest of last year was one of the heavily armed hoodlums that led a protest match to Atan Ota police division leading to the setting ablaze of the station as well as the death of the Divisional Crime Officer of the command.
On the ill-fated day, the angry Ganiyu was reported not only to have turned his wife into a punching bag during a domestic quarrel but in the process manhandled and stabbed his Mother-in- law to death for trying to play a mediatory and reconciliatory role in the quarrel between him and his wife.
It was to the disbelief and chagrin of the residents and non residents of the area who could not believe that a man could go to such an extent of throwing caution to the winds to beat his wife and killed his mother in law.
Giving an account of the unfortunate incident, the police in Atan Ota confirmed that it all started as a domestic misunderstanding between Ganiyu and his wife.
The mediatory role his Mother-in-law, Madam Oyewole wanted to play led to her death.
Speaking on the development, the police authority in the area said further investigation into the incident had begun.
DSP Abimbola Oyeyemi who spoke with newsmen on the unfortunate incident added that the suspect ” was arrested following a report made at Atan Ota Divisional Headquarters of the Nigeria Police by one, Oduntayo Mathew who reported that the suspect who is married to the daughter of the deceased was fond of beating his wife at the slightest provocation.
All efforts made to revive the deceased after being rushed to the hospital for medical attention proved futile.
