The State of Osun is set to play host to an academic simulation of the United Nations, holding at the Redeemer’s University, Ede.
The event is scheduled to hold between April 14 and 17.
Describing the conference, the Executive Director of the Redeemer’s University International Model United Nations, Mr Stephen Ojugbaye, said the model conference means that United Nations is coming to Osun State to interact with young people who would have been unable to interact with the organisation for logistical reasons.
He made this disclosure on Tuesday during a courtesy call of the Redeemer’s University International Model United Nations Conference Team, on Governor Adegboyega Oyetola, at his office at Abeere, Osogbo, Osun State.
He said: “The model United Nations conference is sanctioned and approved by the United Nations. Delegates from the United Nations Information Centre have come around from Lagos to inspect the environment and have granted approval.
“The target audience for this conference are youths, both graduates, undergraduates and even those in secondary school. The conference will provide an opportunity for young people to come and hone their research skills, Public speaking skills, negotiating skills, debating skills, academic research skills, among other things.
“Each delegate will be assigned countries among the committees of the United Nations, and they are expected to take on the role of diplomats, speaking on topics that are germane to the issues going on around the globe.
“So far, young people have started registering from different walks of life and from different institutions, within Osun, outside Osun, and even outside Nigeria”, Stephen stated.
Commenting on the event, Governor Adegboyega Oyetola of the State of Osun, lauded Redeemer’s University for their contribution to the overall development of the State of Osun, especially in academic and health.
Oyetola, who was represented by his deputy, Mr Benedict Alabi, added: “The African Centre for Excellence in Genomic of Infectious Disease, domiciled in the Redeemer’s University, has been helpful in the fight against Covid-19 and other infectious diseases in the State.
“This upcoming programme is a welcome development, especially for the State of Osun, given the direction the State is heading in terms of youth empowerment. We are certain that our children will be well impacted by this programme, even as Osun will also be showcased to the rest of the world during this programme which is both physical and virtual.
“We appreciate your contribution to the development of the State, and by extension the nation”, Oyetola stated.
